Course Information
Regular Course

Designed especially for students interested in continuing their education at colleges, universities and graduate schools, and for students interested in developing their overall skills in Japanese to an extremely high level.
The course is designed as either a 2-year program (starting in April) or a year-and-a-half program (starting in October), but study for a half year or one year is also possible. Classes are organized in accordance with the working knowledge of the students.
In addition to the normal Japanese classes, KICL offers a variety of elective classes, such as preparatory classes for the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and classes in business Japanese, the history and culture of Kyoto, and literature appreciation. There is also a preparatory course for students interested in continuing their education at a college or university in the field of Art and Design after they finish their Japanese study.
Educational Content and Goals
Classes are divided into levels in accordance with the students’ abilities and enthusiasm. The duration of each level course is 6 months.

Requirements for Application
(1) Applicants must have completed at least 12 years of education abroad and be at least eighteen years of age.
(2) Qualifications judged equivalent by the Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language.
Period of Program
2 years (24-month course), 1.5 years (18-month course)
*Enrollment for one term (6 months) or two terms (12 months) is also possible.

*The application fee should be paid when the application is submitted. The application fee is non-refundable, even in cases whereby an applicant does not pass the screening and is denied enrollment.
*If, for some reason, an applicant who has been granted permission for enrollment decides to withdraw his or her application, the registration fee will not not refunded.
【Scholarships】
A scholarship program is available for regular students at KICL.
Three students are selected after consideration of study habits, attitudes and performance for a 6-month period, and each will receive an amount of ¥100,000.
Please consult the office for details concerning this scholarship program.
Furthermore, students planning to continue their studies in an institute of higher education who have superior evaluation transcripts and are judged to have excellent character and aptitude may be eligible for the Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Four students, 48,000 yen per month as of 2010) from the Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Summer Intensive Course
This intensive, 4-week course is designed for those who desire to improve their Japanese in accordance with their respective levels and needs. We also offer a variety of optional activities for you to experience Japanese culture to the fullest in the afternoon.
The content of our Japanese cultural experience program may differ from year to year. Applications will be accepted when the course start.

Course Content and Goals
When multiple classes are offered for the same level, students will be assigned classes in accordance with their respective levels of competency in Japanese.
The content of each level is as described below.

| Level 1 | This course is designed for beginners who know only basic conversational expressions like greetings. Basic vocabulary and sentence patterns are taught so that the students can master survival Japanese such as self-introductions, asking about the time, asking for directions, and expressions used when shopping. |
| Level 2 | This course is for students who are already able to read and write hiragana, have already learned the basic structure of Japanese grammar, and can handle elementary conversational situations using approximately 500 words. Students learn various sentence patterns and the conjugations of verbs and adjectives so that they develop the ability to handle tasks such as asking someone to do something, asking for permission, declining offers, giving advice, and explaining rules. |
| Level 3 | This course is for students who are able to handle conversations using vocabulary and expressions equivalent to N4 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Students study the most difficult aspects of the Japanese language for beginners, such as transitive/intransitive verbs, the active/passive voice, the causative form, and honorific expressions, so that they can handle more advanced and natural expressions in conversation. Students learn to read and write Japanese sentences using approximately 100 kanji. |
Level 4 |
This course is for intermediate students who are able to read and write Japanese using approximately 300 kanji, and handle daily conversation. Students learn new kanji, vocabulary, sentence patterns and expressions by reading the sentences in their text materials, and then practice so that they can use Japanese to give explanations and talk about their ideas in more detail. The course also includes studying speeches & compositions while using familiar topics from newspapers and news reports in addition to the textbooks. |
Level 5 |
This course is for students who have been studying Japanese or who have lived in Japan for a relatively long period of time, students who have little trouble functioning in society using their Japanese, and who wish to brush up on their language skills. Class work is designed to teach kanji, vocabulary, structure and expression through the reading of text materials, and to develop the student’s ability to give explanations and express opinions and ideas. In addition to the text materials, students will be required to give speeches and write compositions. Newspaper articles and video will also be used as supplementary materials in class. |

■Sightseeing in Kyoto:Kiyomizu Temple、Yasaka Shrine
Capacity:15 people
Cost:¥300(admission fee)
Note:We will be visiting Kiyomizu Temple, which is registered as a World Heritage property, Yasaka shrine, and the Gion area. Participants should wear comfortable shoes.



■Sightseeing in Kyoto: Kinkaku-ji (the Temple of the Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji Temple, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

Cost:¥900(admission fee)
Note:We will be visiting Kinkaku-ji Temple and Ryoan-ji Temple, both of which are registered as World Heritage properties, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, famous for enshrining the patron of learning
Participants should wear comfortable shoes.



■Making Lacquered Chopsticks
Capacity:15 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Five colors of Japanese lacquer will be used to paint the chopsticks.



■Nishijin Weaving
Capacity:20 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Participants will weave small place mats using traditional, Kyoto-style (Nishijin) weaving techniques.



■Japanese Tea Ceremony
Capacity:15 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Participants will learn how to prepare and receive tea during a Japanese tea ceremony. Socks should be worn.



■Making Chopsticks Bags
Capacity:10 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥500
Note:Participants will make small bags for chopsticks, decorating them with small figures made from toothpicks and color-patterned paper. These bags will be ideal for souvenirs and gifts.



■Lessons in Putting On a Yukata (light summer kimono)
Capacity:15 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Why not dress up in a yukata and go to a fireworks festival? Participants will learn how to put on a yukata. Lessons will take place at the teacher’s house, and a yukata will be provided to learn with. Women should bring a T-shirt to wear under the yukata. Students who have their own yukatas may bring them lo learn with instead.
This activity is also open to men.



■Nara Field Trip (Horyu-ji & Todai-ji temples)
Capacity:20 people
Cost:¥1500(admission fee)
Note:Participants should wear comfortable shoes and a hat.



■Experiencing Japanese Calligraphy
Capacity:15 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥500
Note:Participants will learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy using sumi (black ink) and a brush, and then write Japanese characters on an uchiwa fan to create their own, original works of art.
The black ink may spatter, and participants should choose their clothing appropriately.



■Making Traditional Japanese Confections
Capacity:0 people (3 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Participants will make traditional Japanese confections filled with adzuki sweet bean paste.
You may also enjoy Japanese green tea with the confections at the tea shop.



■Japanese Dancing
Capacity:15 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Participants will wear kimonos and learn a simple traditional Japanese dance.
This activity is also open to men.



■Flower Arrangement
Capacity:10 people (3 people minimum)
Cost:¥1500
Note:Participants will be taught traditional Japanese flower arranging techniques, and will be able to take their flower arrangements home with them.



■Social Gathering Doshisha University
Capacity:20 people
Cost:¥500(snacks & refreshments)
Note:Would you like to meet and become friends with Japanese university students?
Friendship and exchange will be promoted through activities such as bingo and quiz games.



■Sightseeing at Ohara and Japanese paper making
Capacity:12 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥1200 (¥700 admission fee + ¥500 paper making fee)
Note:Participants will visit the famous Sanzen-in temple and learn how traditional Japanese paper is made.
Comfortable shoes and a hat should be worn.



■Social Gathering Kyoto Sangyo University
Capacity:15 people
Cost:¥500
Note:A buffet-style party with Japanese university students.



■Japanese Cord Braiding
Capacity:15 people (2 people minimum)
Cost:¥2000
Note:Decorative Japanese braided cords are used to adorn the obi sashes when wearing a kimono.
The braided cords can be used to make bracelets or mobile phone straps.



■Yuzen-Style Dyeing
Capacity:20 people (5 people minimum)
Cost:¥700~¥1500
Note:Participants will make handkerchiefs, uchiwa fans and T-shirts using kimono-dyeing techniques.
Handkerchiefs cost ¥700, Uchiwa Fans cost ¥800, and T-shirts cost ¥1500 to make.
Please choose which you would like to make, and pay when you register to participate.
People wishing to make T-shirts should give their size preference to the office. (S, M, XL)
The sizes listed above are men’s sizes; women’s sizes are one size smaller.

Note:Japanese text materials, dictionaries, and text materials and workbooks for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test can be purchased at 10% discount.
Visas
‘Student Visas’ are not applicable for those enrolled in our Summer Intensive Japanese Course, because the duration of the program is too short. Students are advised to enter Japan with a ‘Tourist visa’ (Temporary Visitor). Students from countries with reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with Japan, and who hold valid passports can apply for landing permission without acquiring a visa. For more information on visas, students are advised to contact us or the Embassy or Consulate General of Japan nearest them.
Other
Students who come to Japan to enroll in this course are not eligible for the Japanese National Health Insurance or the Disaster Compensation Scheme for Students in Japanese Language Schools. Be sure to take out an appropriate health insurance policy before coming to Japan. Furthermore, because the course is of short duration, students will not be eligible for discount commuter passes.
